From 1 November, personalised Black Plates with Silver Text will no longer be available for sale.


Why is the silver text colour being discontinued?

 There has been an issue with the readability of black background personalised number plates. The decision to remove the silver font helps to address this issue.

I have purchased a black plate with silver text, but not yet had it manufactured. Will I still be able to get my plate made after October 31?

Yes, any plates that have been purchased previously can still be made.

Customers have until 30 November 2024 to have their plates made, after this date no plates with silver text will be made. 

You can request manufacture with Licensys (the government plate manufacturer) here

Will the black plates with the white text colour also be discontinued?

No, black plates with white text will continue to be available for customers to purchase through KiwiPlates.

I already have a black plate with silver text, will this be recalled?

No there has been no decision to recall plates that have already been purchased.

I already have a black plate with the silver text, can I exchange it for a plate with white text?

The existing plates are not being recalled, so there is no requirement to change your plate to white text. If you choose to redesign your plate you are free to use any of the available designs on the KiwiPlates website at any time, and you’ll need to pay the relevant fee

I recently purchased a Black plate with silver text. I am concerned, will this still be road legal or be recalled in the future?

Existing Black Plates that have been purchased are still legal; NZTA are not recalling these plates.

I have a Black Plate with silver text currently on Layby with KiwiPlates. I am not due to finalise my Layby order until December, will my order still be honoured?

Any plates that were ordered before the cutoff deadline for silver text will still be honoured as long as the purchase is completed by 31 October 2024. You will also need to request manufacture by 30 November. After this date no plates with silver text will be made.

After 30 November 2024 you will still be able to have your plate manufactured in the same design however instead of silver text the plate will come with white text.

Can I schedule the delivery of the E-card?

We want to ensure a seamless experience, but currently, we do not support the scheduling of delivery dates for your E-card. These are typically delivered as soon as the order is processed. 

If you are purchasing your gift in advance, we suggest opting to have the Ecard sent to yourself, once you’re ready you can then forward the Ecard and rights to receive to the giftee
